At Kingsway House we have noticed a marked shift in the last couple of years away from companies having serviced offices to having regular team days instead. So what’s going on? Quite an interesting trend in actual fact. Read on to find out more.

The Great Shake Up – the Covid Years

Until Covid came along the idea of home working was not widespread. People commuted in their thousands to the office every day, did their work and went home again. When the pandemic hit and lock downs started in March 2020 everything changed. Suddenly we all had to work from home and no one knew quite what to do. One thing the large companies did know what to do was to get rid of their expensive offices! And so home working became the norm through 2020 and into 2021.

The Rush to Serviced Offices

As soon as the lock-downs finished in mid-2021 there was a rush to get back to the office. Not in the traditional way of taking out long leases on an empty building, but companies realised that by renting serviced offices on a short licence they could get all the advantages of being back together without the headaches of having their own place (all those utility bills, repairs and maintenance etc). At Kingsway House we were bursting at the seams with companies getting re-established in the office world.

But We Got Used to Home Working!

Along with the drift back to office working came a new realisation. Having been forced to work from home through the pandemic, many had got used to it and actually quite liked it. So the movement grew to keep at least part of the week for home working. Through 2023 and 2024 many companies kept both a full time office open and allowed home working. This was great for flexibility but it meant they were carrying a business cost that wasn’t being fully used.

The Move From Serviced Offices To Team Days

Come 2025 there was a gradual drift away from serviced office provision toward team days. Team days are often called ‘away days’ or ‘office for a day’. Whatever the name, they are in essence booking a room or suite of rooms for a day, bring your whole team in for the day, and get all the advantages of working together without having a serviced office, never mind a 10 year lease! To turn your ‘office for a day’ into a memorable (and popular!) event many companies lay on breakfast baps at 9am and a sandwich buffet at 1pm. Everyone goes home buzzin’ and can’t wait for the next one to come around.
